I've been a loyal gentoo user for the past year and a half now and never had any problems. that is until now....
Last week i emerged the new xorg and also updated my kernel from 2.6.6 to 2.6.8
after reboot i can now no longer start my x server. the screen locks up blank after
i cant ctrl-alt-backspace out by killing X, nor can i go back to the console with ctrl-alt-f*
i've heard about the new xorg not being supported by the ati-drivers but i tried using the generic vga drivers to no effect.
I'm using an IBM T40p laptop.
any ideas? |

Hi Timitsch, nice laptop!
I got
- gentoo-development-sources 2.6.8-r3
- xorg-x11-6.8.0
- ati-drivers-3.12.0
The modules for the ati were build before xorg. Otherwise ati-drivers complains about a too new version of xorg. But xorg runs with this configuration, except opengl.
On my workstation I had the same problem a long time ago with my radeon 8500 LE. The settings in your xorg.conf must be wrong. Have you used "radeon" or "ati"? By the use of one of them my system lockep up too. Try the other one.
The other solution would be downgrading xorg . Or waiting for the stable release of xorg (with new ati-drivers).
I hope you get your xorg running again and see you soon!

thanks for your answer. i tried downgrading overnight to 6.7.0-r2 but it still leaves me with a blank screen, but now the backlight is off too.
the system is still alive, since i can ssh in over the network. if tried using the radeon and fglx drivers in X so far, didnt think about trying ati. will try that later....
edit:
ok, just tried using "ati" to no avail. still locks up
help! i'm being forced to use windows! |
