Hi,

i'm a true n00b at anything else than windows so this might be a stupid question...

I had just finished installing xorg-X11 with some help from my neighbour who acts like the biggest linux guru ever, then he told me i should install Nvidia display drivers. Ok, I tought, went to nvidias site and downloaded http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-6111/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run
did a "chmod 777" so i could run it, everything went fine and then i edited the conf file as instructed. I ran "startx" and the nvidia logo was displayed indicating a successful install - I tought...

Then my elite neighbour found this guide: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml
I tried to run "glxinfo | grep direct" and it returned "direct rendering: No".

We then followed the instructions in the guide, but after finishing that startx would only result in a black screen with no way back, even ctrl + alt + backspace didn't work so a reboot was necessary. We then unmerged nvidia-glx - same result, reran NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run - everything worked again. My neighbour said he was in a hurry and left...

So, what should I do, is the driver currently correctly installed? should I uninstall the current driver and emerge nvidia-glx? How do i do that?

Please help me out, i'm desperate... RTFM doesn't really help =/

First, you should really use the nvidia driver in portage.

Sencond, neighbours who act like the biggest linux gurus ever isn't the best people to take advice from, unless they actually are the biggest linux gurus ever.

First mistake.
nvidia-kernel is in portage; just
Code:
emerge -av nvidia-kernel

like the Handbook clearly states.

Thank him politely, and kill him if he so much as points at the computer again.

No.

Yes.

Exit X.
Remove everything installed by the nvidia custom package - there will be an install log somewhere, or you can try:
Code:
find / -iname "*nvidia*"

Then, RTFGDG[1] ;-)

I would recommend checking if there is a Gentoo solution to something before going off on your own again.
You are new, you need a bit of help - depend on it ;-)
