|
|
Why does my system that is running kernel 2.6.8-r3 want linux-headers-2.4.21-r1?? I know their are packages with dependancies on linux-headers.
I dont see linux-headers-2.6.8-r3 headers in portage, but I do see linux-headers-2.6.8.1, but they are masked.
Which linux-headers should be installed? |

You should do a Code: | # emerge -C linux-headers
# emerge linux26-headers | - Cocker :wq

Thanks for the reply, Cocker68!
linux26-headers says its for 2.6.7 kernel, is that OK with a 2.6.8 kernel? |

Thanks for the answer to Kurse. I've been wondering about linux headers and why by default you use 2.4.* linux-headers with 2.6.* kernel. I think thats what I mean but....

linux-headers are upward compatible only.
That means there's no problem in using linux-headers-2.4.21-r1 together with e.g. gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8-r3.
Only the other way round will not work: You cannot use linux26-headers together with a 2.4-kernel.

OK, gotcha. I have been browsing around and it seems from what I've found in other threads, if you have a 2.6 kernel, you can still use 2.4 headers, but then you cannot get some of the new functionality that comes with the 2.6 kernel (like nptl). Also, if you upgrade kernel-headers, you need to re-emerge glibc.
Correct me if I'm mistaken on any of this.
Thanks again for your help, Cocker68 |

yeah. i usually edit /etc/make.profile/virtuals and change every 'linux-headers' to 'linux26-headers' before i bootstrap. but i imagine it would do the same if you just changed kernel headers later on, and re emerged glibc
well if anyone's interested, this is what i do first, before bootstrap
Code: |
emerge patch && emerge -C linux-headers && emerge linux26-headers
then
/usr/portage/scripts/bootstrap-2.6.sh

If I do this, how will I know which packages need to be re-emerged?
Thanks! _________________ eschew obfuscation |

Glibc depends on it. I remember a discussion about emerging linux-headers for 2.6 and removing those for 2.4 which might brake your system.
Some symptoms are, that you encounter not being able to do anything when rebooting your system. I don't remeber the exact errormessage, but I don't want to meet it again. ![Smile :)](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |
