Vi spiego:
ho settato da kernel (2.6.8 ) il supporto per framebuffer col vesa-tng e 1024x768-16@85.... solo che mi va a 60hz invece che a 85hz come da impostazione....
qualcuno ha idea del perchè? per il resto il framebufer funziona alla perfezione
Inoltre sotto X va correttamente a 85 (quindi non è colpa del monitor ma solo del framebuffer)

il giorno che mai la cambierò (spero tra diversi anni) comunque prenderò una ati (driver opensource che per quella data saranno diventati sicuramente splendidi)

Anche io ho una nvidia GeForce 2 mx 400.
E' possibile che questo problema sia legato alle schede nvidia?!?

Io ho una ati 9200 SE e lo stesso problema mi si ripresenta in frame buffer. quindi penso che non sia un problema delle nvidia. E poi sarebbe il minimo per voi nvidiani, visto che noi atiani stiamo aspettando ormai da 2 settimane l'uscita dei drivers aggiornati per xorg 2.6.8 con il supporto 3D  . Non vi bastano le supermega prestazioni che avete adesso 
saluti dall'nvidiamente orientato Bengio

Si a questo punto credo anche io che io problemi non siano legati all'hardware. Non ho avuto ancora tempo di fare delle prove sul framebuffer.

Io ho una Gef3 Ti500 e sono riuscito a farlo andare a 1280x1024x32 a 85 mhz.. ecco il settaggio di grub, se può servire...

Perchè sono le uniche due opzioni che hai in più rispetto a me
inoltre (sebbene abbia provato sia con che senza) non dovrebbe essere necessario passare al boot la riga di configurazione 1280x1024-32@85 se è quella di default per il kernel... vero?

Dunque... per quanto riguarda pmipal devo dire che ho seguito una guida sul framebuffer e l'ho copiata spudoratamente, ma mi pare serva x attivare la modalità protetta della palette di colori
per quanto riguarda vram:16, sto specificando un quantitativo di video ram da dedicare al framebuffer... e sinceramente mi sembra fosse proprio grazie a quello che riuscivo effettivamente a settare il refresh a 85 mhz!
Potrei confondermi però dato che ho cambiato decine di impostazioni prima di riuscire a settare tutto bene...
nel kernel ho configurato 1280x1024@85, e in effetti senza settare grub andava bene, ma non potevo usare splash screen perché andava a 8 bit di profondità di colore... pensandoci però non ho mai provato a configurare direttamente 1280x1024-32@85!!!
Fossi in te proverei anzitutto con vram:16, poi se non va ricompilerei il kernel come dici...
