Speedo / local fonts - font path problem

Linux version 2.6.8.1-mm4 / kde 3.3.0 / X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.7

from Xorg.0.log:
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list!

Why? The path in Xorg.conf is correct, case sensitive is ok, the files are there. How can I make this work?

The default location for fonts using xorg is /usr/share/fonts.
I suggest using xfs font server to manage/render your fonts. There's a good howto in the DT&T section.
