Very nice designs by everyone, congratulations to all!
My vote went to Aaron Shi though because his design is IMHO the most prefessional looking.
Cheers,

Hmm, a lot of those designs have too many images imho. Iris on Mirror is nice but it would be better if it was purple, because most people associate that with gentoo.
My vote goes to keeping it the same. |

All designs look very professional, but I don't like those pictures that make the site look like a company's website. Gentoo.org is a community site, not a company, so I voted for "Iris on Mirror" because I like it's simple, clean design. I agree with Z3RO that it should be a little more purpelish though.
Good work everyone!!

I, also, would have voted for "Isis on Mirror" if it was purple instead of green. I almost voted for it anyways, but ended up going with "Charles-Andre Landemaine - gencor" _________________ What is the best [insert-type-of-program-here]? |

I went for Iris on Mirror, because I think it's the most welcoming design there. Aaron Shi's design is amazing, but it seems too cold and corporate looking to me.
I agree it should be more purple though, and please can the menu be reorganised... _________________ No-one's more important than the earthworm. |

I voted for Iris on Mirror. It looks very professional while still not using alot of bandwidth/loading time on images and being . And I like how it seems to have more of a consistent look-n-feel across both the front page and the handbook, which may help with the flexibility and scalability requirement. A hearty "well done!" goes out to that all the authors, but I like Iris the best. _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

My vote went to Aaron's design, but I could definitely live with Iris on Mirror as well if the colorscheme is changed. |

I voted for Aaron Shi's design over gencorps because I found the darker shade of purple to be more powerful. I disliked the lavendar colour for gencorp but really liked the design. Iris was clean, and I might have voted for it if it wasn't green. I don't know about others, but when I see green in regards to linux, I think Suse.
Nice work from all finalists. |

I hope this is okay, but I like the Iris design so much I did simply re-color it in purple. The result can be seen there: http://www.monio.de/iris_purple.png . It's far from perfect and not 100% the Gentoo purple, but I think it would look good.

Aaron's page reminds me of the SuSE webpage. Derek's made me think of apple's webpage. I like all the designs, and was torn between Aaron's and the Iris one in the end. In the end I decided on the Iris one. I've got nothing against the green personally, but I wouldn't mind purple either. |

The green used in Aaron's design makes me ill. it's a nice design but there is something about that green with that purple that just doesn't look good to me. The gencorp one looks nice too but I don't like how all the information is organized, the same goes for Derek's design. Iris is clean and simple but the green just doesn't work for me because I've associated gentoo with purple, and I don't think that association will ever go away. That leaves me with gentech. It's light, easy on the eyes, and the winner in my opinion. No offense is meant to any of the designers, they are all excellent designs but I think the gentech design just brings everything together a little nicer in a more readable way. Aaron Shi. Looks professional, nicely done. Easy on the eyes and simple.
Allthough the banner needs some work (rocket fuel part should be removed), and IMO the high performance computing part should instead read: "gentoo linux"
in exactly that case. _________________ we are microsoft, lower your firewalls and surrender your pc's. we will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. your culture will adapt and service us. resistance is futile. |

Ah... Apple! Of course! I was wondering where I'd seen that design (of Derek's page) before...
Aaron's entry looks the coolest and has a decent information density. That enormous "high peformance computing" banner just makes it hard to look at the site because of my banner blindness... still, it's the only one with a breadcrumb trail, which I happen to find a very valuable design element. I'm not sure if the book in http://www.gentoo.org/images/wwwcontest/contest1_handbook.png is supposed to make the top navigation bar look glitchy that way, and I can't say I *really* appreciate the corporate look but... it's pretty much the best of these candidates.
I voted for keeping the old look&feel. The current website is not the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, but it's highly usable and looks like a smaller download than pretty much any of these new candidates could be made. _________________ <laurentius> gentoo linux?

I Voted Aaron Shi, but I could definately go with Iris if it was purple.
I think tha having a corporate design is a good thing. There is a reason corporations use that design: It works.

+1 gencorp
but best would be a mix between the two "Charles-Andre Landemaine" designs : appearence of gencorp (colors, tabs, google search etc.) and disposition of gentech (left bar and 2 columns with picture at bottom) ...
Great work of each submitters !!
Thanks to all of them !!

Wow, some great designs...
I took quite a bit of time flickering back and forward through the lot.
Eventually Aaron Shi's design got my vote, I just hope that when the winning design is implemented the forums become part of the site, so I can quickly navigate between the forums and other sections of the site.
My only problem with the existing site is that from the forums, there isnt a simple link at the top to return me to the main part of the site.
Anyway thats my 2pence worth.
Thanks - Code Monkey |
