Does Linux ( Gentoo, Mandrake or Fedora, the distros I use ) automatically set the monitor refresh to a safe value?

For example, in Windows, you can disable refresh rates that the monitor cannot support. Is this the case with Linux?

if you use a tool to automatically configure X, its pretty safe, but you can very easily screw up your monitor with crazy sync/refresh rates if you set them manually.

You can use "Modelines" in you xorg.conf file to control refresh rates:

Be careful! I actually blew up my monitor experimenting to much... (and ignoring the warning signs like a flickering tube once in a while  )
