Hi,

I just ripped out a radeon card that was *really* annoying me, and got a cheap-and-cheerful NVidia FX5200 to replace it with.

I compiled nvidia-kernel, and reconfigured xorg. It all works, but glxgears gives me a framerate of under 10fps!!

I tried with xorg 6.7.whatever, and then upgraded to 6.8.0. Same results.

I'm running kernel 2.6.9-rc2-mm2 and I'm using gcc-3.4.

Direct rendering is enabled. AGP is loaded. But it's so slow!

Here are the details... (sorry about the length)

glxgears
Code:
46 frames in 5.0 seconds =  9.200 FPS
42 frames in 5.0 seconds =  8.400 FPS
44 frames in 5.0 seconds =  8.800 FPS
46 frames in 5.0 seconds =  9.200 FPS
25 frames in 5.0 seconds =  5.000 FPS
48 frames in 5.0 seconds =  9.600 FPS
46 frames in 5.0 seconds =  9.200 FPS
44 frames in 5.0 seconds =  8.800 FPS

That is odd...

After a quick glance at your config files, I guess you could remove the:

Section "dri"
Mode 0666
EndSection

and the

VideoRam 131072

lines. You shouldn't need to touch anything with dri in the x config file, and videoram should be autodetected correctly.

And as for the obvious solutions, you're not running glxgears while say compiling anything (or anything else that eats the cpu) are you?

pppptthththt... doh.

Code:
simon@moonunit ~ $ sudo /etc/init.d/setiathome stop
 * Stopping SETI@home...                                                  [ ok ]
simon@moonunit ~ $ glxgears
2762 frames in 5.0 seconds = 552.400 FPS
1596 frames in 5.0 seconds = 319.200 FPS
4169 frames in 5.0 seconds = 833.800 FPS
4169 frames in 5.0 seconds = 833.800 FPS
4249 frames in 5.0 seconds = 849.800 FPS

I dunno what figure to expect, but that'll do for my purposes.

However... Shouldn't setiathome be in the background more than anything else? How does it manage to kill this, when it's nice 19?

I get a slow glxgears interface, but then when I click on another window to the foreground, the fps quadruples and the gears are turning like they are going thru the roof! Here is my output:

Code:
burana@68-232-21-142 ~ $ glxgears
2784 frames in 5.0 seconds = 556.800 FPS
3263 frames in 5.0 seconds = 652.600 FPS
2787 frames in 5.0 seconds = 557.400 FPS
2767 frames in 5.0 seconds = 553.400 FPS
4089 frames in 5.0 seconds = 817.800 FPS
4673 frames in 5.0 seconds = 934.600 FPS
4484 frames in 5.0 seconds = 896.800 FPS
4584 frames in 5.0 seconds = 916.800 FPS
4445 frames in 5.0 seconds = 889.000 FPS
4960 frames in 5.0 seconds = 992.000 FPS

can yuou see where i changed what was in forground?

I have the same card as you and I get about 1100 fps in glxgears with a couple of aterms running, gaim, mozilla and openbox.

quick specs of my system are:
Pentium 4 2.6 Ghz with HT on
512 DDR ram

I think you should be getting at least a 1000 fps but I could be wrong..

That was funny, because I was getting thousands of frames a second, until I took out the DRI module, then it dropped to 30, and that was with the window at the default small size. Stretched full screen I was getting 500fps still with the dri and glx both loading. Any idea why that might happen?

First of all, glxgears is not a benchmark, its there just to check if the 3d acceleration is working.

Second of all, setting up nvidia is described here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml

And last but not least some tips:
- get rid of unneeded crap in the kernel ..(like rivatnt support and so) everithing is handlet by the driver,
- make sure to have compiled these as modules in the kernel: agpgart and also for 2.6 version kernel users (for example if you have nforce chipset) nvidia-agp, (or via-agp, etc....)
-make sure these modules, and also the nvidia module, are loaded.
-you can try using agpgart or internal driver for agp from the nvidia driver (take a look in the driver readme file how's done)
-after driver installation, don't forget to make "opengl-update nvidia"
