The ability to view a directory is dependent on the "execute" (x) right on the directory. If you remove this right, then the associated user/group/other will be unable to view the directory. So, you could remove "other" execute rights from all the directories on your system where you don't want users who aren't the owner or a member of an appropriate group to be able to see.

However, this is a pain because you have to change the rights manually for each individual directory. |
