My dad has an oldish Gateway P5-75 from 1995 that is running Windows 98se, poorly. I'd like to put Linux on it and dual boot (Linux goes on the 6gig hd) so it can spend less of the 32mb of ram on Windows. What I'd like to know is, will Gentoo work for this computer, and what sort of software can I get away with installing? I'd like a gui, but KDE is probably not going to be very swift, and OOffice might be a little bloated for this PC. I'd also like a terminal program, if anyone has suggestions. TIA for any input. |

You can make a nice console machine out of that. But X probably won't run very well on it, even with a minimal wm like fluxbox. And mozilla or firefox will be pretty much out of the question. As would be kde, gnome or OOo. |

I already run Mozilla on it. I just run it in Windows. Is X really so much more resource-intensive than Win98se? |

A stage one install will take a few weeks, and any error will cost you a few days. A stage 2 a week min, a Stage 3 about 2 days maybe less. You can use nano and ispell for all your word processing needs. _________________ Registered Linux User #365302 |

Not with a better computer and distcc.
Mozilla or firefox with a light WM might work, but for anything else I'd run everything remotely on a better box. The 32Mb of RAM is what really kills you. I've run Star Office 5.2 with 64Mb RAM and it took forever to start but was usable otherwise. Recent versions of OOo actually take less memory and are more responsive in general. |

I'm not sure cause of the power of your client box, but you could try this. There is other howtos in the D,T&T forum that might be helpful as well.
If i understand correctly - all the client needs to be able to run is a vnc client, so you could even use win98.
