voice modems are reliant on their windows drivers to make them work. Under windows the voice modem part of the modem appears as a sound device.
I'm not sure if you'll find a modem with the same functionallity in Linux.
Asterisk is using the inbuilt telephony support of the linux kernel, to connect to a POTS or ISDN line you need a special card.

One other option is to use vgetty (included in the mgetty package)
It might be older and lighter than Asterisk. It might be easier to configure too.
Quick and dirty way to get vgetty to work is :
Code:
emerge mgetty

edit /etc/inittab :
Code:
# add this to /etc/inittab
S1:345:respawn:/usr/sbin/vgetty ttyS0

Then edit /etc/mgetty+sendfax/voice.conf to configure it.
You may prefer Asterisk though.
