nightmorph: No, this is PPC specific.

bz31: I haven't really tested it enough to know for sure, I can usually trigger it with a kdelibs build though, you're more than welcome to give it a try. :)

I use the option CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y since the 2.6.13-rc1, it seems to me it works fine.
I would like to know if this option is useful for ppc (if it works without problem).

Any news? This sounds interesting. That would be one advantage of a 2.6.14 kernel.
I tried some while ago SMP+preemption but didn't notice a difference.

"Better" Desktop performance and response would be nice, since I found nice games like open transport tycoon which stresses my G3.

2.6.15 should include additional PPC preempt fixes and may actually fix the cache corruption we were seeing before. I wouldn't try it on an earlier kernel, but if you feel like trying preempt, please use the latest 2.6.15 kernel.

I have successfully done some minor compiles now. I notice that I can still move the mouse while heavy load of a mplayer for example. I hoped that DVD playback get's smoother with preemptive but it's still a little bit choppy.

The patches didn't help, preempt is still broken in 2.6.15. If you have trouble, that's the first thing I'd turn off. :p

The original post essentially asked what preemption is for, and the answer is: audio recording. Programs like ardour require a low latency environment for optimum recording quality, and while OSX has very low latency by default, there have been some issues with latency and linux in the past. I don't quite understand, but I think it had some security problems.

These have largely been solved in x86 world, but apparently PPC's have had a cache corruption issue, or at least have had in the past. I have been running a preempted kernel (gentoo-sources-rc[1,3,5]) for a month now, with no segfaults.

hope that's useful
