Neither when I do cat < /dev/psaux nor when I do cat < /dev/input/mice do I get any output when I move or click the mouse.
I've compiled the kernel with PS/2 mouse support, and without devfs. I haven't emerged udev yet.

well you need udev to create the nodes you need. emerge udev, run udevstart and try again

Emerged udev and did "udevstart" but the devices are still silent.

try 'cat /dev/input/mice' and wiggling the mouse

I solved it.

It seems the module psmouse was not loaded.
