OK, I'm recently rebuilding my system from stage 1 and bootstrapping off the old one. when I did emerge gentoo-dev-sources, I got kernel version 1.6.8-r3. I configured my kernel and tried to boot the mascine. when it got to "bringing lo up" said "oops" dumped the stack to the screen and gave me a segmantation fault. are there any kernel options that I would have to change to get it to not do this? |

Obviously, but since you don't give any info beyond the fact that it's an antique kernel version there's not much to go on, is there ? _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

try compiling your kernel with Magic SysRq and then try altgr+print+E |

I understood that, but it was indicative of how little info there was...
Of course it can be your kernel config - how do we know ?
What did you change from the last one, and what exactly do you mean by "bootstrapping off the old installation" ?
Was that a fully completed emerge system ?
Because that is basically what the LiveCDs carry - a bare Gentoo system.
What would be the advantage of bootstrapping from an old system as opposed to doing a clean re-install from a LiveCD ?
I can't see it - you still have to build all 3 stages. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

I'm just wondering if there is a spacific item on the kernel configuration that could be causing my problem |

Well, again - how would we know which one ?
By its very nature, almost any kernel configuration item could be a potential show-stopper.
That's how important the kernel is, after all.
Since it stops at trying to bring lo up, I would suggest starting with the networking options...
Thought about my question yet ?
What is the point of bootstrapping from an on-disk system when you have to go through the exact same steps as with a LiveCD ? _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

the advantage, is that I still have all my old data, kernel configurations, and settings to look at. |

Then why can you not get your kernel working ?
I realise this may sound unsupportive, but it does indicate what I said earlier. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /
