I'd like very much to use portage on OS X but it makes me nervous that it lives in the same root as MacOS. Fink seems to put everything in /sw which is great. There must be some way to do something like this with the OS X portage but I can't figure out how. Help? |

I think you can use the ROOT variable for this. Either specify it on the command line (ROOT="/portage" emerge foo), or put it in your /etc/make.conf. _________________ No-one's more important than the earthworm. |

Okay, that's a start, but it only gets me about half way there. How can I make the installer put the portage tree and emerge programs, etc in a new root? Is this even possible. Maybe a chroot or something? |

Until PATHSPEC is fully implemented (it's a new portage feature in the works) you won't be able to easily seperate Gentoo and MacOS. For now, you shouldn't be able to really mess up your MacOS install unless you disable collision protection, which protects files that were not originally installed by portage. Using a seperate directory will probably not be the default behaviour of Gentoo, but you will eventually get the option.
If the idea of having Gentoo use the same root as OSX makes you nervous, you probably should stay away from it at the moment, as it's still very much in development. :) |
