|
|
Hello,
I'm having some issues with my Radeon 9600 Pro. I've installed Gentoo from scratch, and now my system is very choppy...
I get only 1900 FPS from glxgears, before I got almost 3.5k (I know, it's very bad benchmark, but...)
And moving windows is very slow. I'm using ATI 3.12.0 drivers and X.Org 6.7.0-r2. My kernel is definately configured correctly. I've tried different version of ati-drivers but none of them works.
I've configured X.Org couple of times but it doesn't help at all. Direct Rendering shows "Yes" and all modules are loaded.
I've tried with 2 different kernels, 2.6.9-rc2-nitro1 and 2.6.8.1-ck7. Doesn't help.
Thanks very much, in advance!

How about gaming performance or something? Compare it to something besides glxgears. |

Yeah, but even moving aterm is slow...and everything else.
Now I understand why so many people hates ATI, and especially it's Linux drivers! Count me in list.
EDIT: Hmm, I'm wondering could Reiser4, NPTL, UDEV or 2.6 bootstrapped system cause this? I don't think so... |

dont use xorg's configuration program .. use fglrxconfig and then
Code: | # mv /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to /etc/X11/xorg.conf |

I've done that. I've tried to configure it with fglrxconfig, xorgconfig and copied xorg.conf.sample and edited that by hand. |

Yeah, I'm not going to buy ATI cards again
I messed around a bit and now aterm moves quite smoothly But damn, I don't trust glxgears. How should I test real 3D performance? |

IIRC, there is a fglxgears or something to that effect (check /opt/ati/bin). That should give a better representation. Of course, you can always run something like ET or UT (if you have that) to compare the performace.

I tried to play some video files with MPlayer and stuff...Works very smoothly.
Conclusion: glxgears is a bunch of crap that shows whatever it wants! |

LOL. No one ever said that glxgears was a good way to actually test your video performance, however, it does give a rough estimate of how your performance compares to others.

I browsed some threads about sluggish window movement...When I'm trying to move windows from a titlebar it doesn't move very smoothly (up and down movement sucks, left to right is smooth). But if I use ALT + left mouse button and trying to move it, it's so freaking smooth! There has to be something _really_ weird stuff going on...but I don't know what...
I tried to renice X, success? no Preemptive (or whatever) kernel doesn't help...
Any help would be _really_ appreciated
...And one more thing, moving GIMP windows is really pain in the ass, but if I use ALT + left mouse button to moving, it's again so smooth!

Are you using swsusp2? This happens to me after a suspend/resume cycle. From talking to the people on the devel list, it looks like it's an ATI problem (shocking). You may lose your XV overlay as well, if you wanted to check that out. However, if I restart the X server, it all goes back to normal. |

Thanks for your reply. I am not using swsusp2.
EDIT: Well, problem is solved, or at least sort of...
Thanks all |
