Hi,

I have set up Usermin to allow users at my department to change their own password easily, and manage some simple things like mail forwarding and .htaccess editing.

It seems to be working just fine except for one thing. I discovered last week that I could not contact Usermin if I connected from a computer running Windows XP SP2. Contacting Usermin form Windows Server 2003 works, contacting it from Windows XP SP1 also works.

I do not see the same problem if I try to contact Webmin. Webmin works, Usermin does not.

They are both running in SSL mode, Usermin on Port 20000 and Webmin on Port 10000.

Any ideas? Since Webmin works and Usermin does not I'm not sure where the problem could lie. Perhaps a combination of a bug in Usermin and one in XP SP2? I've tried every possible permutation of firewalls in XP, built-in, no firewall, third party firewall. There is no difference.

/Olof

Sounds like a security problem, try adding usermin to your list of trusted sites in ie. Also, see if the same problem happens when you try using an alternative browser like firefox.
If the problem is security in ie then you can set this globally through group policy. Also make sure it's not a problem with pop-up windows (I've never used usermin so I don't know if it makes use of these) again if that's the problem pop-ups can be allowed globally through group policy.

I use Firefox 1.0PR currently, I initially thought it could be related to Firefox so I tried IE. The problem is the same in both browsers. The successful connections I've made from other machines have been with IE.

I've tried to think of solutions like this and tried all combinations I can think of. Since it is SP2 that fails, a security setting of some sort does seem likely, but why does Webmin work? I thought that it could be related to the port number but I've done some tests with Usermin listening on port 80 as well, I had the same problem in those tests.

I did not find any answer to why Usermin and XP SP2 did not want to play together on port 20000. However, I now run Usermin on port 443 and everything is fine.

I had tried ports other than 20000 previously with no luck, but 443 did the trick in this quite weird situation.
