Hi,
I've been trying to install Gentoo on my new mobo - it's a SOYO KT-400.
I grabbed the livecd iso, burned a CD, and it seems to boot fine. However, the networking does not work. I tried using both the internal LAN, as well as putting in a 3COM PCI card and using that. Nothing seems to work.
An ifconfig seems to bring up the card. When I ping my default gateway (which is a Netgear NAT router), I get timeouts with the occasional bad packet. I know the hardware is fine, because the same machine/setup works great using my old Debian system. I'm thinking maybe it's the Gentoo kernel configuration with my mobo.
Has anyone heard of this problem before?
thanks,
-mike |

Just a thought, but are you using kernel 2.4.19? Because the vt8235 south bridge that is the counterpart to the kt400 isn't supported in this revision and might have some relevance. Try 2.4.20rc2. From the google-snooping I've been doing I don't think there are any problems once you have the latest kernel, although maybe agp might need patching.
I don't see why you couldn't use 2.4.19 with working lan driver with a kt400 off the top of my head but it might be worth a try.

The VT8235 is not correctly recognized as a VIA chipset in 2.4.19, but does not cause trouble, aaprt from not being able to activate DMA. This can be corrected , but I too doubt that this is related to your problem. |

Hi all,
Thanks for your help.
Someone on the gentoo-user mailing list suggested that I turn off APIC in the BIOS, which did indeed fix the problems with the networking hardware!
Regards,
