All the installation guides I've read have stated that unless I'm duel booting a broken OS I should set my time to GMT. Now I'm in the process of building a system that will not run MS Windows at all and I'd like to know the benefits of running my system in UTC/GMT.

AND...

I am located in Michigan, USA which is EST or GMT -5. If I were to set my system to use GMT are the following steps all I need?

1. Set the clock in the BIOS to 5 hours ahead of the time on the WinXP machine.
2. ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/UTC /etc/localtime
3. set /etc/rc.conf to use "clock=UTC"

OR

1. Set the clock in the BIOS to 5 hours ahead of the time on the WinXP machine.
2. ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Americas/Detroit /etc/localtime
3. set /etc/rc.conf to use "clock=UTC"

Thanks in advance for your help, I appreciate it.

Okay, that covers the how, and thanks, Golloza for the quick response.

Now are there actually any benefits to using UTC over EST?

I don't think so - local time is there to be used. :)

The Linux system clock runs always in UTC, and the time is converted to the zone defined by /etc/localtime only when it's displayed to the user. Keeping your BIOS clock in UTC avoids unnecessary time zone conversions (and possible errors) and makes Daylight Saving Time handling easier.
