Mandrake has a nice little app called autologin which seems to replace xdm,gdm etc,etc.I got a source rpm from one of mandrake's cooker mirrors and have been playing around with it a little here and there but can't seem to get it to work with gentoo.
Since I'm the only one that uses this pc I see no reason for a login screen.

So what is it suppose to do?
After booting the system, instead of going to a login screen (i.e textmode or gui such as xdm) it reads a file you'll have to create called /etc/sysconfig/autologin which contains the following (this was taken from the readme):
Code:

USER=[username]
   Start the session as the user specified here.
   This setting is mandatory. If omitted, autologin will not run.
   If autologin was compiled with --enable-paranoid, autologin will
   not run if the user specified has UID or GID 0.
EXEC=[script or program]
   The script or program listed here will be executed as the user
   specified above.
   If this setting is omitted, /usr/X11R6/bin/startx will be used.
AUTOLOGIN={yes,no}
   You can use this setting to turn off autologin even if it is
   installed and the config file exists and is considered safe.
   If this setting is omitted, "yes" is assumed.

Then calls pam to get the defined user's password and logs that person in.It then runs a script or program such as startx or xinit.

No I'm not lazy.I just don't see a reason to log into a pc that no one else uses.Saves time and resources that gdm and kdm will take up.

I guess you probaly know this, but kdm has an auto-login function. I like this as I can still switch users in X if I wan't too, but still get my default user allready to go at boot.

There are many ways to enable this feature. I usethe following to configure this,
KDE Control Center
-->LoginManger
-->Administrator mode
-->Convenience tab

GDM also has autologin, if you're a Gnome guy (which I suspect you're not, since you want MDK's autologin...).

Try the "nuts-n-bolts" method from here
And put startx in your ~/.bash_profile.

Thanks a bunch guys for the replies.

At the moment I'm using Gdm but don't like the overhead.A few years ago I was using kdm but kde has become such a resource hog I stopped using it all together.As a matter of fact,Gnome isn't far behind which is why I usually use Icewm (customized and tweaked to the brim).
Gnome or Kde both serve their purpose and do their job well but just aren't for me, so please don't flame me for the above statements. :)

The nuts and bolts method looks very promising and will definitely give that a try.

Again,thanks for the replys.

The nuts n bolts worked as far as logging in automatically but the script to start X didn't.I tried adding /usr/X11R6/bin/startx to my bash_profile but that messed things up in X.

Next question is does anyone know of a good way to start X automatically at login?
