Is anyone here using a japanese keyboard? I`m using kinput2 and canna for typing japanese text but today I got my hands on a japanese keyboard and now I`m able to type again
This is the "keyboard" section of my xorg.conf file
Code: | Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "jp106"
Option "XkbLayout" "jp"
|
Is that correct?
My questions are the following:
1. how to type in a "pipe"? (It`s printed on the key left of the left shift key [but as third symbol])
2. How do I type kana/kanji?
I am using xorg-x11-6.8.?.
Thanks,

You can type "|"(pipe) on a Japanese 106 keyboard by holding down shift while hitting the Yen mark.
It should be the key on the top row, 3 keys to the right of the "0" key.
I use SCIM-anthy for Kana and Kanji input. It's really easy to setup and use.
Here's the gentoo howto I that worked for me.
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-263174-start-0-postdays-0-postorder-asc-highlight-japanese+scim+howto.html
To type click the SCIM Icon and choose Japanes UIM-anthy.
Click the Hankaku/Zenkaku button in the upper left hand corner to switch from English and Hiragana input.
Once you switch to Hiragana input, type r-a-j-i-o.
That should give you "らじお" in hiragana.
Hit the space-bar and you'll get the katakana version.
Click the enter key to accept and you'll get "ラジオ".
You can type kanji in the same way.
If you'd prefer to use kana input over romaji input just click the "R" button located on the SCIM icon.
That will allow you to use the Hiragana characters printed on your Japanese 106 keyboard.
I'd recommend using Romaji input over Kana because younger Japanese don't usually learn it and
you'd have to learn a second keyboard map.

Umm ... thx for the help but I solved it already and forgot to note it in this thread, sry
I prefer Kinput2 and Canna (never got SCIM to work) and after one year of learning japanese I was finally able to read the documentation and configure that thing. Now everything works fine. My goal was to type english, japanese (with these fancy extra keys) and german umlauts.
And yes, the hiragana input is somewhat uncommon today but I can type faster this way.
Thanks again,
