I'm looking to install Gentoo on my dual proc machine, but when I boot the smp kernel, it locks up during the device autoconfig. Everything works beautifully when I boot the standard (non smp) gentoo kernel.
I have a pretty solid idea as to what's causing this. I believe that kernel 2.6 is causing this. The standard gentoo livecd boots kernel is 2.4. The smp kernel is 2.6.
I previously had Debian installed on this machine with kernel 2.4 and everything worked beautifully. But when I tried to upgrade to 2.6, a whole slew of problems ensued. Firstly, I got dma timeout errors on boot for my hard drive. Second, none of my USB devices would work. They were detected, but the kernel spat out something about the device not accepting address x (where x = some number). Finally, my ethernet card was improperly configured and failed to get an IP from the dhcp server. ifconfig showed a bunch of ipv6 stuff while my network is ipv4.
I believe all of these hardware problems are identical in my booting of the gentoo livecd's smp kernel. My machine and kernel 2.6 don't seem to play nice. Can I pass some opts to the smp kernel on the livecd boot to get it to properly configure my usb devices and ethernet card? |

I cant help directly but if you havent already do a Search useing "smp AND usb". You could also try eith hotplug. The other thing is that when you boot if you hit F2 it will list boot options. _________________ An A-Z Index of the Linux BASH command line |

The machine I was recently working on was a dualie also...and the 2004.2 livecd I found that the nofb or agpgart flags help the smp kernel play nice right off the bat. on first boot on the live cd my machine ate it hard...so then I just started playing with the options.
Now sure in the main compilation of things you would have the help of the 2nd processor...but...umm...in a pinch would it matter? You'd be compiling the source to support SMP, so "theoretically" when you booted up under the new clean homebrew kernel...it should come up with 2 processors....then again...I might really be off the map on all this...so I'm just gonna click submit and get some sleep... |
