|
|
I have a SATA based system. Its got a Silicon Image 3512a chipset for the SATA controller. Its formated reiserfs. Im not running RAID on it, just one drive. It boots find in my 2.6.5 kernel, no problemo. I've had a hell of a time trying to get my system to boot off 2.6.8.1 and was hoping someone could help.
During bootup I get a long lag sitting at
Code: |
/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0:
|
after which it adds -
Code: |
ata1 command timeout
|
It gets to the point in the boot process *right before* it displays "Found Resier Format 2.6" and locks up. No responce at all from there. Keep in mind I am *not* getting any errors with invalid boot partition" errors.
In the kernel I have Device Drivers-> SCSI -> SATA support and Silicon Image SATA support compiled in (not as modules) like I had on my 2.6.5 kernel. I do not have SATA support included under ATA support as it says it conflicts with libata SATA drivers, which I assume are what I have included.
It just seems like the system cannot see my SATA HDD at all for some reason, thus why it can never find the reiser format. Honestly, I'm pretty lost.
The system still boots into my old kernel without a hitch. Does anyone have any ideas on what the crap is going on here? Ive seen random posts on the net about kernel changes regarding SATA in the last few versions but no one getting the same problems I have gotten. Thanks in advance. _________________ http://www.atomicraygunattack.com |

did your old kernel have this? if so, then try putting it back in. great thing about kernel compiles is they dont take too much time (unless youre on a pentium-133 or something).
but i think 2.6.8.1 is a bit wiggy. i compiled it, it didnt work(no compile errors). it stalled out but didnt even give me any errors. so, i recompiled with the exact same kernel config, and it worked!
i feel like im taking crazy pills!! |

I still have my old kernel on the box so I'm not toatlly down. I had a lot of whacked modules from past experimentation in my old kernel and things were slowly breaking. I figured if I was going to recompile I may as well upgrade. Ah well.

I guess this is what I'll do. Thanks for the tips, now I don't feel quite as dumb. _________________ http://www.atomicraygunattack.com |

With a face like that , all the love you want Baby
try love-sources , or my current favourite 2.9.2-rc2-nitro4.

right....
Anyways I installed 2.6.7 and it boots fine. Problem is it's *super* unstable. Compiling anything locks up the system, running X for 20 min or so does the same thing. Keep in mind this is a Sil Images SATA chipset with reiserfs on it. Is there anything wacky they have changed that may cause me these problems?
..this is not a hardware problem...2.6.5 runs AMAZINGLY solid. Months of uptime. _________________ http://www.atomicraygunattack.com |

Oops , sorry for the careless post:
Code: | -bash-3.00#uname -r
2.6.9-rc1-nitro4
|
I've been using this kernel for about a month and it had been completely stable for me including reiser4 for most of my system except /boot.
Before that I used 2.6.6-love4 for about 6 months without a hitch.
I cant comment on SATA support since I dont use it but I think these two are solid kernels. You'll have to look at the release notes and support threads for SATA support.
Sorry I cant be more use , but you were bumping the thread so I thought any help would be better than silence.
