Hello,
I have posted a message about this 2 or 3 hours before, but I have not seen it appeared in the forum. So I write a new one. I would like to buy an external box for my IDE hardrive, like the Enermax EHD-350.:

I have never experienced external hard drives with Linux. This box uses USB 2.0 plug. So I have to buy a PCI card to get USB 2.0 on my computer. Are all USB PCI cards and all external boxes compatible with Linux? If not, could someone give me recommanded brands or models for Linux?
Is it easy to install? Just recompile the kernel (2.6 for me) with USB storage support and voila? hot plug is ok? What could happen if I unplug or turn off the hard drive without unmount it?
Are these external boxes compatible with ACPI? My friend has an iMac with a LaCie external hard drive. When he turns on his computer, the hard drive turns on itself. When he turns off his computer, his hard drive turns off itself. Is it possible with Linux ACPI support?

I'll try to give some answers pamplemousse wrote: | Are all USB PCI cards and all external boxes compatible with Linux? I'm surprised your computer doesn't seem to have one, it must be VERY old.

Just select the correct USB implementation for your system (OHCI or UHCI) and then the USB 2.0 (EHCI) too. You can choose between compiling as modules (especially useful when using hotplug) or building into the kernel. |

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I have only USB 1, and I have to buy a USB 2.0 PCI to get full bandwidth to the USB hard drive.
Thanks. _________________ AMD Sempron 2800+ 64bit, 512 Mo RAM, ATI Radeon 7000 (64Mo), Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value, 32-bit installation.
