I have a CMI8738 based soundcard, seems to work OK with ALSA/JACK however both the line and the mic inputs seem to be _very_ quiet when recorded. A normal computer mic produces a barely audiable recording, I've also tried feeding the line out a CD player in to both the Line-In and even the mic input (which I would have thought would saturate it...), and again even at full volume it is fairly quiet - although louder than from a mic (I would have expected it to be clipping especially on the mic input).

Any thoughts? I've tried messing around with the mixer, the mic boost doesn't seem to have that much effect and the mixers are all maxed out.

Thanks.

Update
I decieded that it might well have been a card problem, as the line input was very noisy too (it was a _very_ cheap card), returned it and got a SB Live - seems to work OK now. So not really a solution, but beware cheap audio cards.
