Garbled characters with mailx in From: field

I've been trying to send messages from my gentoo box using mailx and ssmtp. The messages are being sent just fine, but I get a series of garbage characters in the From: field. They are prepended to the normal address.

If my address was "blahbbs@gentoo.org", it would show up as this in the text of the raw message:

From: "garbagecharactersblahbbs"@gentoo.org

"garbagecharacters" are mainly unprintable characters. Because of the garbage, an automated process that is receiving the mail chokes because it's XML parser doesn't like the funky characters.

Any ideas?
