Alsa seems to work but the sound is just so wierd( a'la bass is too over and theres no treble), OSS seems to work if i symlink /dev/sound/adsp to /dev/dsp but if i understand right then it's just using the alsa device( and the sound is still wrong ) if i try to use /dev/dsp without symlinking /dev/sound/adsp then i just get the error that /dev/dsp is missing, im quite puzzled and i have no expiernce with gentoo( using it about 1 week and still with the messed up sound ) so if anyone has a good idea how to get OSS working it would be great, ive searced the board many times put no one is using OSS anymore, but i have no reason to go over to alsa yet.. |

Looks to me that you have a pretty good reason now to move to ALSA. Your sound is not working. Alsa can emulate OSS. OSS is, and I love this word, DEPRECATED, check your kernel.
I recommend ALSA and it is easy to set up

In the phraseology of wikipedia: The neutrality of this article is disputed.
gentoo_dude's statement needs to be caveated. Some people have found ALSA to be easy to set up. Some people are having an awful time with ALSA. The breve YMMV has never been more truer than in describing people's experience with ALSA.
Still, I agree with gentoo_dude. Give ALSA a try. If it works for you then you'll be happy you did. But, if it doesn't work for you don't feel that you failed something that was "easy". |

Try to make alsa work, and if it really doesn't work try oss.
I remember that on my old computer, the sound quality with alsa was really bad, but it was just fine with oss. |

I did as the alsainstall manual say'd, got it working, but the quality of alsa is still really freaking bad( Treble nad bass are mixed and i can't understand a word of the song.. ), so im sitll looking for a little help getting my OSS working, /dev/dsp is at this point using /dev/sound/adsp( Should be the device what alsa is using, because when i set xmms to use /dev/dsp witch is symlinked from /dev/sound/adsp it still gives me the low quality sound) |

When you want to use oss, you shouldn't install alsa.
I think you're confused about oss emulation.
Oss emulation is something from alsa (so you still use alsa) that emulates the way oss works.
If you want to try oss, you shouldn't enable anything of alsa, includings oss emulation |

If you want to try oss, then yes.
Just disable it from your kernel (and enable oss), then recompile your kernel |
