Well, not super ancient, but a touch behind the bleeding edge...

I'm trying to build a makeshift server out of old parts... and I have run into a bit of a performance road block.

parts in question:
p133
old mobo, can't even tell which manufacture.
old IBM 1.7 GB harddisk (1996).

hdparm -tT reveals:

Code:
/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   136 MB in  2.04 seconds =  66.67 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:   14 MB in  3.13 seconds =   4.47 MB/sec

Now, I'm not sure if this is to be expected.. but it seems a touch slow.

Anyways, so I thought things might improve if I could only figure out which hdd controller to compile into the kernel. I haven't a clue what it is. Close inspection of the motherboard doesn't reveal anything, and dmesg and bios are about as useless.

So I wonder if any of you ancient hardware enthusiasts have some ideas about figuring out which hdd controller i might have.

South bridge has a few things sketched onto it:
Code:
Intel
PCIset
FW82439tx
F7200014
SL238
Intel  '96

Ideas are most welcome
