I posted about this a while back, and some people reported similar issues, but I am still working on figuring out what is going on:
THE PROBLEM:
for gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8-r(3,4), while it detects eth0 fine, and even obtains an IP address, the ethernet doesn't really work. It generally downloads or reads about 4kb of data before hanging. This goes for downloads and webviewing from a number of different programs.
THE WEIRDNESS:
The weirdness is that nitro-sources work fine with eth0. Also that gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7 worked fine.
THE DETAILS:
bcm4401 ethernet card on an intel pentium M laptop.
How would I go about figuring out what is up? Read the changelogs for the bcm driver? what else should I look at? Anyone have any ideas?
