I have a Western Digital 120GB 8MB cache 7200RPM drive that I want to turn into an external drive. So I am looking at external enclosures.
I want it to have both USB2 and firewire, though I plan to primarily use it via firewire. Ideally it should support up to a 250GB drive, even though I plan to use it with a 120GB. Obviously, linux support is a must (though I realize almost any will work with linux...I meant I am hoping to get one that works with linux via firewire (and over an Audigy2 firewire port too, no less)).
From the searching I've done, it looks like a drive using the Oxford 911 (?) chipset has the best firewire performance (and for that reason I should avoid Speeze enclosures).
However, the Speeze enclosures are aluminium and have no fans (but apparently still have good heat dissipation).
Is there an external enclosure out there with firewire and USB2, like the Speeze enclosures, but with the oxford 911 chipset?
Any suggestions as to a good external enclosure are welcome.
thanks! |

Ok, so the Bytecc ME-740U2F looks like my best bet, at least from newegg. It has all the features I want - an oxford chipset, aluminium case and no fan. And it supports up to 300GB. Anyone have any experience with these enclosures?

I'm sure it's a bit late for you but thought I'd post this for others...
I got a Kingwin Model KH-350UP-S Firewire/USB combo from newegg that is working with my Samsung 160GB drive. Oh, kernel 2.6.8-r3 |
