|
|
I have a folder full of ogg and mp3 files on my gentoo server. There are about 4000 files in the folder but viewing a samba share thru windows xp only shows 1430 files. If i view the same folder through an ftp connection i see all of the files in the folder. I've restarted the samba controller and changed all the files in the folder to be owned by the same user and group of the user connecting to the share with xp and also chmod the files to 777. What could the problem be? I'm at a lost. If i try to copy a file into the samba share that is already there, I do get an error saying that the file already exists. I've tried from 2 different xp computers to view this share. |

I think it may have something to do with 8 dot 3 name mangling but more than that I can't say.
If you have loads of files that all start with the same 6 characters (like the name of a band) samba could quite quickly run out of possibilties for 8 dot 3 names. I know that on windows you can turn the function off, but I've never come across such and option for Samba.
My advice would be to not have 4000 files in one directory.
I've had a quick read of the samba docs and as far as I can see full support for disabling 8.3 filename creation won't appear untill samba 4 |
