Problems with terminal filling screen with blue colour

Strangely, sometimes when im using irssi in a console (infact very often) ill move to another window to do something else and when i come back the whole console is blue instead of the colour it should be (black with text on it) and there is nothing there. The only way to get the text back is to shrink it to half size or expand/maximize it depending on the state it was in when it started. Its really strange..
