Does the new xorg uses XFT?

In xfree, there used to be 2 (well 3 but 2 I used) ways to install fonts, one is by specifying font dirs in the xorg.conf another way (XFT)is to edit font.conf followed by a fc-cache -f -v. Is XFT still used? If so, is there any reason to use 2 fonts system anymore? Thanks

anyway i think it's better if you edit both files: xorg.conf and /etc/fonts/local.conf
