Hello,
I just installed Gentoo on a G3 iMac, 233Mhz, 96MB memory. I decided to use udev and kernel 2.6.7.
How can it be that the kernel picks up on my root partition, but it can't be found in the /dev directory?
Here is my transcript of the boot messages. What could be causing this?
Code: | ReiserFS: hda5: found reiserfs format "3.6" with standard journal
...snip...
ReiserFS: hda5: using ordered data mode
ReiserFS: hda5: journal params: device hda5, size 8192, journal first block 18, max trans len 1024, max batch 900, max commit age 30 max trans age 30
ReiserFS: hda5: checking transaction log (hda5)
ReiserFS: hda5: Using r5 hash to sort names
VFS: Mounted root (reiserfs filesyswtem) readonly.
..snip ...
* Mounting proc at /proc... [ ok ]
* Mounting sysfs at /sys...
can't create lock file /etc/mtab~452: Read-only file system (use -n flag to override) [ !! ]
* Mounting ramfs at /dev... [ ok ]
* Configuring sysem to use udev... [ ok ]
* Using /sbin/hotplug for udev management... [ ok ]
* Mounting devpts at /dev/pts... [ ok ]
* Activating (possible) swap... [ ok ]
* Remounting root filesystem read-only (if necessary)... [ ok ]
* Checking root filesystem...
Failed to open the device '/dev/hda5' : No such file or directory
Warning... fsck.reiserfs for device /dev/hda5 exited with signal 6.
* Filesystem couldn't be fixed :( |
Any help is appreciated. Thanks,

More ifnformation. After the error about not finding /dev/hda5, I am able to login from this prompt:
Code: | Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D for normal startup): |
From here I can see that the /dev directory contains only:
Code: | .udev
.udev.tdb
core -> /proc/kcore
fd -> /proc/self/fd
null
pts
shm
sndstat -> /proc/asound/oss/sndstat
stderr -> fd/2
stin -> fd/0
sdtout -> fd/1 |
