Im trying to upgrade to linux-2.6.9-rc2-mm4 but Im having trouble booting with my new kernel. It stops booting right after it says "Checking 'hlt' instructions...OK" then nothing happens after that. THe fisrt time it wouldnt boot it stopped when it tried loading APCI so i removed that from the kernel and now it wont go past CHecking htl instructions. Also, using vga=791 produces a black screen and nothing happens.

Are you still able to boot any other kernel e.g. using the livecd, knoppix or your old one?

Yea I can still bot my system i still kept my old kernel cause I knew i might have a problem with the new one. mm-sources doesnt seem to be working for me lately so I figured it would be wise to keep a backup.

I'm having exactly same problem. It should start Local APIC and IO after checking 'hlt' instruction. I dropped those out but it didn't help. I have the same configuration as with my earlier kernel, linux-2.6.9-rc1-mm2. I've always at least one backup-kernel because forgetting or misconfiguring SATA and reiserfs3 may cause kernel panic. For now I'll stick to the old kernel. I'll check it later on after I've done mkfs.reiser4.

I couldn't boot it either; hangs after testing 'hlt'. Used only the options I had on my (working) 2.6.6 kernel. Machine is IBM T40.

same problem on several recompiles

IIRC I kept the APCI but removed all options except the fan and button.

Also removed /dev/agpart from char devices

Basically used a process of elimination until it booted. However the end result was not good, X was still hanging despite applying the Nvidia fix by DaMouse in this thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=216985

Can't seem to get xorg stable with nvidia 4xxx, 5xxx, or 6xxx on anything higher than 2.6.5 as far as mm-sources go.

Dual 1G PIII, reiserfs on SCSI, gf3 ti500 - mobo is an ASUS CUV4X-DLS based on VIA Apollo 133 - I'm about ready to blame the mobo myself as it's already been singled out for special treatment in gentoo install docs as long ago as 1.2 I think - you had to turn off one of the BIOS options to get the install to work...

I had the same problem. I removed the "Preempt the Big Kernel Lock" option and now it boots fine....

OK removing that option worked now I just need to get my nvidia drivers to work.
Edit: OK it works but is useless, I tried every nvidia-kernel patch and I keep getting some error about allocating DMA. I tried the newest version of mm-sources and its even worse, I guess I'm just not having any luck with mm-sources. It seems everything is getting worse with new releases.

There were some changes to the kernel that make it incompatible with the current nvidia drivers. You can either go back to an older kernel or brave some of the patches available here https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=216985.

I found that even after I got X working with the nvidia drivers that it was *very* unstable, so I am just going to stick with the nv driver for now.[/code]

OK I just did an emerge sync and installed the rc2 of the nvidia driver and it fixed all my problems.
