Hello,
I just installed fplugd on my laptop, and the default beep is very loud. It uses the pc system speaker. I have tried using xset b <volume> but that doesn't work. I even did xset b 10 and it just makes the duration way shorter at the same volume. It should change the volume, but its not. And then when I left it at 10, I tried unplugging the network cable, and the same loud long beep came, so obviously I was not changing the default beep volume. Is there any way to do this?

Thanks!

will that set the length to 0? I want the length to be the default, just run the volume at 50% or so.

The system speaker is a very ancient piece of hardware :)
The only thing the computer can do, is put the speaker "on" at a certain frequency. This is the only input the speaker circuit can handle. (well of course it understand the "off" comand as well) Therefor it is not possible (in software) to change the volume. You can do it in hardware by buildinging resistances.

So if you do want to change the volume, just use your soundcard, that is made for your delicate sound problems, a beeper is there to beep only. With a lot of desktop managers you can bin the default beep to a specific soundcard sound.

(Well techically speaking it is possible to change the volume of your pc-speaker, but then you have to emulate playing wav-files on it, by changing the frequency very fast. Turning your pc-speaker into a very very cheap soundcard. But then again you can't have the default beeps played there, you can use that as you would use your soundcard right now)

Ok, that sounds reasonable, so the command xset b <volume>,<frequency>,<duration> doesn't really change the volume? They control the volume by decreasing the duration dramatically?
