I have installed gentoo from the live-cd onto an SATA drive connected to a PCI controller (3112A). During the install, the SATA drive was /dev/sda.

I have 2 IDE hd's on my primary controller and a CD on my secondary, so Grub recognized /dev/sda as (HD2). I installed grub here, and when I select to boot from this drive, grub loads (so, when I installed to MBR, the drive was HD2.0).. HOWEVER.. when I boot from the drive, Grub now sees the drive as HD0 instead of HD2.

I edited Grub on the fly and changed HD2's to HD0's. I also had to change the root from /dev/sda3 to /dev/hda3. (of course I had to make the fstab changes too)

I can boot this way, but I have no IDE drives :( I was hoping it would just change their numbering and the IDE drives would be hdb, hdc, hdd.. but, the SATA drive is the only drive that shows up, and it does so as /dev/hda. Nothing on the IDE controllers. I went to /dev/ide and see nothing but the SATA drive and it's four partitions.

As I've been typing (this always seems to happen), I've thought of a few things more I can try.

If I fix it, I'll come back and tell you how :D

Feel free to point me to a relevant thread... If there is one, I didn't see it :)

Ok, getting Linux into NT's bootloader is a pain (suprise), so I'm not going to bother with it for the moment. Maybe by the time I have lunch and smoke a few smokes, there will be some "easy fix" posted :D (I love it when I do dumb things... easiest to fix)

You probably would want to reconfigure your kernel so that SATA support is given through the SCSI interface and remove support for having it done through ATA.

This might make your problem vanish as ATA would have to be used for the IDE and not used at all for your SCSI.

Agreed.
I put a SATA in 'specially for Linux (sdb for me). There are threads around saying you don't need the SCSI support in the kernel, just use the hardware.
I tried this on my P4P800, which appears to have native SATA support, but couldn't make it fly. Had to enable SCSI in the kernel (2.6.8-r3) - whatever, you'll be much happier seeing both hd? and sd?.

Thanks a lot! Recompiled with the SATA support removed from IDE and added to SCSI and that's all there was to it (Grub still sees it as hd0). It's amazing how much more I enjoy Links as opposed to IE :D (Not great for porn, but still)
