|
|
I have a box with Gentoo installed on my work system. There are 4 Windows systems and my Linux system connected to the Linksys 8 port cable/ DSL router. We have a cable modem dedicated connection with a dynamic IP / DHCP. There are two network printers connected to the router and are used by all systems for printing. There is no dedicated print server. All systems can print independently thru the router (printers IPs used).
I want to add my Linux System onto the peer to peer network, but do not want my system used as a print server. I just want to print thru the router directly to the printers as I did with my XP box. The ability to share files is nice, not a necessity.
I know Samba and Cups area used for this task and I have printed off the guide to printing. Do I need to go thru the total setup of Samba to reach my goal? Is there another solution out there that could work?
Any help is appreciated
Thx, Scott |

If all you need to do is print, you do not need Samba; CUPs will handle it. Of course, if you want to share files (or access shared files), then Samba is required. _________________ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy"

You do need samba as a backend for cups.
Cups uses some program from the samba package (smbspool or the like) as a backend for it to access windows shared printers. |

The original post stated that the printer was not shared via a Windows machine, but was directly connected to the network with it's own IP. In this instance, you do not need Samba.
If the printer were shared via a Windows machine, there would be a need for Samba. _________________ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy"
