Just did fresh gentoo installation, merged ati-drivers but xorg doesn`t start...

Get this error:
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found

Here is xorg.conf
and Xorg.0.log

Shouldn't your "Standard VGA" device be commented out, since you have the ATI device section?

Also, you could try commenting out the bus ID line in the ATI device section.

Hmm. It's possible that particular error isn't fatal -- are there any others?

Um.... one assumes your AGP stuff is okay?
ie. agpgart is loaded, if you need that with an ATi card - what about intel_agp or equivalent?

I had the same problem I couldn't get past 640x480 even after I set the DefaultDepth and “1024x768” in xorg.conf. After a bit of stuffing around I discovered that if I set a HorizSync and VertRefresh value in the Monitor Section I could get past 640x480.

If these values a set incorrectly I believe you can fry your monitor :( so be careful!!!
I set my monitor to low values until I can google and find the right values
HorizSync 30 – 40
VertRefresh 50 – 60

Now at least I can run at “800x600”
