Hi All:

I've been doing some research on ecrypting drives and it seems that the only open source thing that's well supported and currently available is the dm_crypt stuff. This is great, it will transparently handle encrypting an entire partition.

But what if you don't want the entire partition encrypted? Is there something that allows you to just create a 'container' (file with pre-allocated space) that can be mounted as if it's a normal partition? (I'm aware of BestCrypt, and a friend said it's a great product but I'd like to use something open source and supported by the linux community.)

Thanks!

On the web site from the link above:

Quote:
IMPORTANT: Cryptoloop has been marked deprecated in the latest 2.6 kernel. This means that it will no longer be maintained actively. The successor to Cryptoloop will be dm-crypt. Dm-crypt is available in the main kernel since 2.6.4. Cryptoloop will still be available in the main kernel for a long time, but dm-crypt will be the method of choice for disk encryption in the future. Dm-crypt is based on the device mapper and offers pretty much the same functionality as Cryptoloop. It is still very new and there are no easy-to-use userspace tools available yet. Dm-crypt is considered to be much cleaner code than Cryptoloop, but there are some important differences. For example, creating an ecrypted filesystem within a file will still require to go through a loop device, but this support is still in development.

It was one of the things I had been looking at until I found it was deprecated, so are there alternatives so you can do 'containers'?

Thanks for the link though!

Sorry. I'm no expert in this area. Just had this 'cryptoloop'-thing in mind and thought I can give you a hint.

Seems to me that "file-loop-cryto" (simular to that in cryptoloop: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Cryptoloop-HOWTO/filebased.html) is also supported.

Take a look at this: http://www.ppcnerds.org/displayarticle186.html

It shows how to do encryption with both cryptoloop and dm-crypt
