Can't seem to resolve local names without the full host name

Hey guys:

New install and I can't seem to resolve hostname that are part of the "domain" specified in my resolv.conf file. IE i can't just ping blah, i would have to ping blah.domain.com...

Any ideas of where else i might need to look?

try adding
search domain.com
at the bottom of your resolv.conf

I tried that, I have it there as well, but still a no go
