|
|
Im just currently using the default 2.6 kernel from portage. I've been seeing many different named kernels (nitros or something? love?) which I have no idea what it means. Can anyone recommand one that gives best overall heavy desktop performance (looking mostly for responsiveness for something like kde) Thanks. |

They're "just" (a lot of work is required) patchset's applied to the standard vanilla kernel to enhance/modify functionality.
As for a recomendation, I'd say if everything works fine for you don't touch it. If you got lot's of time to experiment then start playing with kernel parameters and then use some more aggresive patches for vm and sheduling. Create your own patchset that contains just the patches you need. |

I started with the standard gentoo-dev-sources like yourself and experimented with mm, nitro, and several other 2.6 kernels.
I always came back to gentoo-dev-sources. I never noticed enough of a difference with the other kernels and at times they weren't as stable.
It would be nice to see a portage type system where you could start with a vanilla kernel and add the patches you wanted. If patch X needed patch Y to work, it would let you know and give you the option of adding it.
eg. USE="nicksched reiser4 cmddvd ..." emerge gentoo-dev-sources |
