Can anyone here tell me what I should enable/open in iptables so that I can use active ftp ?

please explain what you exactly want! do you have an ftp server runing and want user to be able to connect to your ftp-server in active mode? or do you want to be able to connect to other ftp-servers in active mode?

Maybe I am stupid, but I still don't see who needs to connect to ftp in active mode?

btw: If you can't connect to a ftp in active mode, then it is probably the other ftp server not allowing active connections! Or your firewall is NAT'ed and passes your internal IP to the ftp server and the server has trouble with it.
Normaly you connect to TCP port 21 and 20 if you do an active connection. If you don't allow that, then please change your firewall rules.

for my linux box active ftp isn't necessary...
but some update clients on a winxp box also connected to this router apparently do not support passive ftp....

I totally forgot about port 20.. thanks for the reminder !
