This is my first stab at linux, so please don't kill me for my ignorance!
My partition setup is as following
hda: the slave drive actually, only containing my collection of DivX movies.
hdb: on hdb1, I have my winxp installation, my linux boot resides in hdb2, my root in hdb3, my collection of mp3's, programs etc. in hdb4, and finally, the swap is located in hdb5.
I have performed a stage2 install of Gentoo, and I have made it to the step of the first boot of the system, after configuring the bootloader. The problem is that neither Grub nor Lilo is capable of booting my Gentoo install, my xp just boots automaticly. Lilo complained about my first harddrive dont being the boot drive, so I have a suspicion that the bootloaders gets confused, since hda is not the harddrive that boots. Here follows my Grub and Lilo conf's:
#Grub:
default 0
timeout 30
title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.8-r3
root (hd1,1)
kernel /kernel-2.6.8-gentoo-r3 root=/dev/hdb3
title=Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1
#Lilo:
boot=/dev/hdb
prompt
timeout=50
default=gentoo
image=/boot/kernel-2.6.8-gentoo-r3
label=gentoo
read-only
root=/dev/hdb3
other=/dev/hdb1
label=windows _________________ Life is a sexually transmitted disease. |

Is the problem that you just don't see the grub menu ("xp boots automaticly") or is there an error when you choose your gentoo installation? |

Wow, it kinda magicly fixed itself, after some fiddling with the ide-cables.
Looks like my harddrive with gentoo and winxp is the slave drive after all.
Does the fact that the drive that houses my os's is the slave drive dramaticly impair my systems performance? _________________ Life is a sexually transmitted disease. |

You can use the following command to test your hard drive performance:
hdparm -tT /dev/hdX
(replace 'X' with your drive specifics...also if you have a SCSI device it would look like 'sdX') _________________ #define CLEVER_SIGNATURE 1 |

Phwuu, glad to hear that!
Just a bit euphoric after finally getting my gentoo up and running.
Now I just have to decide which window manager i'm going for...
Thanks for the help, folks. _________________ Life is a sexually transmitted disease. |
