Hello all :)

I need a mail server; I have my own domain, but the hosting doesn't include an smtp server. I just want to be able to use it for local IPs.

Under windows, I've been using postcast server, which has done a great job for what I need, but I'm using gentoo more than windows these days. I've looked at the available HowTo's on the gentoo site, and I think they're all a bit hardcore for what I want (I've no network domain, no need for external access, and it should only be myself and my gf on three kits using it).

Can anyone suggest a good setup for a few-user home network mail server? I'm perfectly happy to go rtfm for whatever package is recommended, but I need a recommendation first, and qmail, sendmail etc seem a bit over the top for one bloke needing to send a mail from home.

Is there a simple package out there?

But this may still be more than you need. It is, however, very easy to set up.
Just emerge it, and also webmin. You can then use webmin to configure it, and start it with
Code:
/etc/init.d/postfix start
.

This was enough for me, my wife and a few friends and is now prooving fairly easy to scale up.

I like the Courier package. It has smtp, IMAP and POP. Intended for maildir format, not mbox mailboxes.

You could also take a look at Exim.

I run courier on top of postfix for my pop3 and imap services. I also recommend squirrelmail if you want to use webmail(ie mail anywhere). Having an IMAP webmail client, and IMAP desktop client gives you a lot of freedom. Now I just have to get my PDA connected with it all...

Thanks for the ideas guys :)

Just fiddling around with the postfix config in webmin now. Looks like it's just what I needed.
