I've actually solved this one, but I thought I'd post it for those who hit the same snag.
The symptoms are dhcp working fine from the installation CD, but not from the installed system, and it being possible to start it manually, but only about 1 in 10 times you try.
It seems my ethernet link to my cable modem takes a long time to sort itself out, and the trick is to do "ifconfig eth0 up" and then tail /var/logs/syslog untill a message like this scrolls past:
localhost kernel: eth0: Setting full-duplex based on MII#1 link ...
and then starting dhcpcd
Sometimes this takes about 5 seconds. Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 minutes. I don't know why. |

Is a method of waiting for that message to come through, and then starting it in an automated way. You could use [your favourite scripting language here], and follow the log until it does.
Does anyone know of an easier way to do that? _________________ Danny Staple, curator of http://orionrobots.co.uk
