Hello,

Thank you for looking at my post,

I'm having a problem with Xorg 6.8.0-r1 not working properly in VMWare running on Windows XP Pro. I'm running VMWare 4.0.0 Build-4460 and have installed the vmware-tools that are included with VMWare in gentoo running kernel 2.4.26-gentoo-r9, and added it to my runlevel.

vmware-tools compiled the "vmhgfs" module, which is set to autoload in my /etc/modules.autoload/kernel-2.4

Here is what my runlevels look like:

Code:

                apmd |
            bootmisc | boot
             checkfs | boot
           checkroot | boot
               clock | boot
         consolefont | boot
         crypto-loop |
               cupsd |
          domainname |
              esound |
                famd |
                 gpm |
              hdparm |
            hostname | boot
             hotplug |      default
             keymaps | boot
               local |      default nonetwork
          localmount | boot
             metalog |      default
             modules | boot
            net.eth0 |      default
              net.lo | boot
            netmount |      default
                nscd |
             numlock |
             portmap |
           rmnologin | boot
              rsyncd |
              serial | boot
                sshd |      default
             urandom | boot
          vixie-cron |      default
        vmware-tools |      default
                 xdm |
                 xfs |
              xprint |

I have added the DefaultDepth for 24 and have specified mode 1024x768 in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf however it fails to start xorg in that resolution, seems to always start it in the default window for VMWare. I'm running Framebuffer at 1024x768 and it shrinks down to start xorg and then resizes itself once I CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACK the X session.
Here is what my /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like:

Code:

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier     "X.org Configured"

EndSection

Also this is what vmware-tools states when I run /etc/init.d/vmware-tools start.

Code:

Stopping VMware Tools services in the virtual machine:
   Guest operating system daemon: done
   Guest filesystem driver: done
Starting VMware Tools services in the virtual machine:
   Switching to guest configuration: done
   Guest filesystem driver: done
   DMA setup: done
   Guest operating system daemon: done

If anyone has any ideas on what could be causing this problem, and has a moment to sit down and reply I would greatly appreciate it, I would love to have Gentoo running on VMWare..

Thank you for your time.

Seems that I resolved this with the help of this guide.
http://www.mikeskinner.net/linux-conf/etc/X11/xorg.conf-vmware.txt

Behold the power of google :)
