Is there a special way to mount that i'm unaware of? (I just used mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom)
My second question is completely unrelated, i've got an ISO of WinXP, is it possible for me to install the operating system without having to write the iso to a cd? As in could the cd still somehow be mounted when I reboot? |

No, same reason you cant carry on watching a movie when you reboot your PC.
You can however install windows in vmware under linux. There's also win4lin that has great performance running windows under linux. |

Specify the filesystem type "udf" and see if it helps. (most dvd's use udf instead of iso9660 which cdroms use) Does dmesg report anything when mounting or accessing that dvd?

Some older versions of windows could be installed from harddisk. (create a fat partion, copy cd contents to it, boot with a dos/win boot disk and run setup). But I guess this won't work with windows xp. If you want to try it, see if the cd contains a program to make bootdisks, use it with wine and hope for the best. |
