I am trying to install java according to the java users guide:

"If you run emerge dev-java/sun-jdk-1.3.1 or emerge dev-java/ibm-jdk-1.3.1, you will be notified that you are required to download the actual tarballs yourself. This has to do with license restrictions for the Sun JDK/JRE (online click-wrap license) and registration issues with the IBM JDK/JRE.

You should download the indicated file(s) into /usr/portage/distfiles. Once that is done, you can rerun the emerge command, then the JDK/JRE will be installed properly into /opt."

I have downloaded the file into /usr/portage/distfiles but I have no idea how to emerge it from there.

Emerge just like you did before that gave you the downloading instructions. This time it will find the tarballs and complete the install.

I tried that. It keeps telling me to download the file and place it in /usr/portage/distfiles

Which I already did.

Is the name of the file it's asking you to download exactly the same, Because it will also ask you to download a documents file as well.

Are the files in the /usr/portage/distfile file. I had a problem once because my user did not have write permission to this folder so while it looked like I was downloading the file it was not written to the directory.

Yes, the files are saved into that directory. I've done this all as root.

Moved from Installing Gentoo.

If you've finished the install guide, look somewhere else. But if you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place.
