on my computer, every time you startup, after all the rc stuff has finished, a whole bunch of "declare -x somthing" messages appear. after that, i have to push enter for the login promt to appear. also, when i log on as root, it shows a bunch more "declare -x" thingies. it doesn't seem to affect anything, but i'd prefer a normal boot like on my other computer. if this has been answered somewhere on the forums, blame the horrible phpbb search.

It is very hard to pinpoint the problem. The symptom clearly tells what happens, but not where (specifically, one of the rc scripts attempts to export a non-existing variable). What does /var/log/messages say?

dmesg is the about same thing as "tail -n 500 /var/log/messages" right?
